Mother, Actress, Author, Entrepreneur, Mental-Health Advocate, and now, video vixen most recently seen flaunting her “Body (bodyody)” in Megan thee Stallion’s new music video; Taraji P. Henson brought her “A” game as this year’s American Music Awards host. From the minute she hit the red carpet, to killing a choreographed dance to “Savage;” Henson shut it down.

No stranger to the red carpet or killing a look, Henson made headlines for a record number of outfit changes; 12 to be exact. Even more notorious; however, her hair. Rocking her signature, red hair with each style change… a variety of styles to compliment and bring each visual story to life. Simply stunning; look after look, and achieved with the assistance of celebrity hairstylist Tym Wallace. Wallace gives W4TC an inside look on how he achieved each of Henson’s hairstyles, and where he drew inspiration to execute each individual change.

    Black Supermodel

Every artist, no matter the genre, has original ideas; however, they all admire other artists, and use that admiration as a way to add flare to their original ideas or a way to pay homage. When creating Henson’s AMA wigs, Wallace says “the inspiration was glamorous, modernized 70s and top, super models like Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, and Naomi Campbell.” As we review, Wallace certainly pulled each look off effortlessly, as Henson clearly gave 70s, Black, Supermodel vibes the entire night.

    Color Steps:

    • Step 1: Prep the wigs using Joico “Defy Damage ProSeries 1”
    • Step 2: Pre-lighten the wigs using the pre-lightening formula. Process to at least a level seven
    • Step 3: Shampoo and Condition with Joico Defy Damage Protective Shampoo and Conditioner
    • Step 4: On dried hair, apply “Formula 1” to the pre-lightened hair. Process for 35 minutes.
    • Step 5: Rinse and shampoo with Joico Color Infuse Red. Allow to process for minimum of five minutes to enhance and infuse more red tone into the hair.
    • Step 6: Rebuild the bonds of the hair and treat with Joico “Defy Damage ProSeries 2” for five minutes to strengthen the hair, and add shine and protection.

    LOOK 1

Wallace says, “I parted the hair down the center and created these crimp like waves with my flat iron, spraying Joico JoiMist Medium as I created the crimps. After setting, I then used some Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock Glossing Oil and emulsified it in my hands to finger the waves out. I added the Joico Beach Shake Dry Texturizer for piecyness then I used the Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray for volume.”

    LOOK 2

Wallace says, “I pulled the hair in a low ponytail leaving some tendrils around the face. I used the Joico JoiMist Medium Finishing Spray to ensure a smooth and sleek look.”

    LOOK 3

Wallace says, “The 3rd look was a curly texture wig that I colored a really dark red.”
