Listening to grown women being grown womenJill Scott
The first time I heard a Jill Scott song was when she released “Long Walk.” I watched the video in my grandparents’ house; just in awe of her voice, style, and that beautiful natural hair. Of course, I did not know she was from Philly until my mom said, “it looks like she is in North Philly.” The next music video she released was “Gettin in the way,” and at the age of 11 after watching that video I said, “yup, She’s a Philly girl” and from that moment on, I been rocking with “Jilly from Philly.”
Mother, poet, singer, actress and Philly Native Jill Scott has been gracing us with her poetic sounds since the 2000s when she released ‘Who is Jill Scott?” Since then, Jill has been providing the soundtracks to help us express our heartbreaks, love, feeling blessed, living life like it’s golden or being comfortable with our own sexualities. Jill didn’t just captivate the music industry, she drew us all in with how great of an actress she is with lovable and memorable characters such as Sheila, and Hazel Rachelle.
When you are an artist, sometimes your creativity overflows and needs an outlet to nurture that creativity so that it can flourish. The free spirited, geniusly creative Jill Scott recently sent down with iHeartDigital Audio Group CEO Conal Byrne to talk about how the vocalist was introduced to world of poetry and music, and how it has led up to her newest baby… J.ill the Podcast.
When asked how the world of poetry was introduced to her, Jill credits her 8th grade teacher to introducing her to spell binding poets like Nikki Giovanni who made her feel like she sees herself on paper; she goes on to say that she started to write poetry because she got her heart broken and did not know what to do with that pain. The music part of Jill’s artistry came after a frightening incident which resulted in Jill and a friend being shot at; Jill says that will at a poetry club she wanted to express her feelings about the incident but she could not Soley express what she was feeling with just words, “The words weren’t enough I needed sound.”
There comes a time when you feel drained or worn out and need time to regroup to get your creative juices flowing again as Jill says when she feels like she burned out she knows it time to stop and just return to the “simply joys of life;” some of Jill’s simple Joys are talking to strangers, walking around her favorite store target with her earbuds and coffee, and making fun of the kids in target (lol).
During the pandemic, Jill also had time to recharge and regroup; being at home for longer than 2 weeks at a time and having time to talk to friends like girl talk with no interruptions or time constricts. While having so many interesting conversations with her girlfriends Jill’s internal lightbulb went off and she thought other people might want to her the raw and organic conversations that she and her girlfriends were having, why not a podcast? Jill thought and being to make the necessary phone calls to put her thoughts into motion and not long after J.ill the Podcast was born.
“Jill Scott, Laiya St.Clair, and Aja Graydon-Dantzler are music and entertainment icons, but they’re also experts in the art of no-holds-barred conversations. Jill Scott Presents: J.ill the Podcast is like chilling with that friend who says what everyone wants to say but is too afraid to – times three. Expect unfiltered talk about relationships, health, art, and everything else that comes with surviving and thriving as a Black woman in the world.”
Jill’s goal was to recreate that comfortable and organic conversations she seen her aunties having; Jill said “I’m like an auntie now… I could not wait to reach that age where I can impart the wisdom, I have not just learned from what I have read but what I have experienced. Jill wanted to emulate what she seen her aunties doing giving the world a taste of “listening to grown women being grown women.”
