Sound Bites delivered by Grubhub was live from Philly Wednesday night feeding all our souls with the sultry sounds of Philly native Jazmine Sullivan along with UK sensation Ella Mai for two, exclusive performances. The Grubhub free concert was not the only benefit that night; each artist started the night out with Q&A’S to interact with the virtual crowd, and every chat or tweet with the hashtag #GHSOUNDBITES during the livestream, Grubhub donated $10 to Restaurant Strong, an organization that is provides grants to local restaurants up to $100k.
Although W4TC was not in the building live, we joined in with the energetic crowd virtually; singing (well trying to sing lol), engaging with others in the virtual audience, and reminiscing on how much we miss live music and concerts. The show was live from Philadelphia, so it was only right that the show kicked off with the R&B Goddess repping her city the only way a girl from Philly could… simply, kill it. Jazmine graced the stage in all white looking relaxed, but gorgeous with flowing hair and a perfectly beat face. She started off strong with her single “Bust the windows” from her freshman album “Fearless.” Jazmine followed up with her first number-one record “Pick up your feelings,” letting the crowd know that we are not playing with these guys. Jazmine kept belting out hit after hit and even gave another taste of her newest single “Tragic,” reminding the ladies that we must reclaim our time. The queen of riffs and runs ended her set with her single “Holding You Down” from her sophomore album, all while paying tribute to the Fugees and Lauryn Hill song “Killing me softly with his song.” It is safe to say that Jazmine understood the assignment and delivered 100 percent. Sis was even trending on twitter! Now that she has proven repeatedly that she is a beast when it comes to this music stuff, stop y’all playing and give her the much-deserved Grammy!
The night did not end just that fast, because next up was RIAA Certified Platinum artist Ella Mai. She graced the stage with laid edges and shoulder length Bob that was on point. Her outfit? A lounge-like, green outfit paired with a pair of comfortable, thigh-high boots.
Her set started off with high energy with her single “Good Bad” from her debut album “Ella Mai.” Just like Jazmine kept the audience engaged with her signature singles about love such as Boo’d up, Trip, and Shot Clock, Ella knows how to keep an audience full of Philadelphians hype and mentioning Meek Mill is one way to do that! “I did this feature with a Philadelphia artist a few years ago, but I’m gonna sing it for you guys to see if you know it,” she says. Of course, the crowd goes crazy… with one girl saying, “I can do the rap,” the audience goes on to assist Ella with rapping Meek’s part of the song. Ella finishes strong with her Billboard Hot 100 Hit “Trip,” leaving the city of Philadelphia with a serenade from her catalog of love songs.
Jazmine and Ella’s stage presence connected with the audience, both live and virtually, which made for an amazing show. Both ladies’ work of art spoke to any of us; from being infatuated with your man, or being foolishly in love, to letting it be known that “we ain’t no cheap hoes.” (lol)
Lauryn Hill was also a common theme with both women showing love to her by using her songs during their sets; showing that we can still admire the ones that have come before us all while making a name for oneself.
