A Blessing on Blessings type of night!Jekalyn Carr
The Stellar Awards are back; bigger and better this year after hosted virtually in 2020. This is the only awards show to honor the gospel music industry, and this year’s televised experience will showcase some of the most-talented gospel artists the industry has to offer.
This year’s show is hosted by Jekalyn Carr and Tye Tribbett; two of the most talented singers representing the newer generation of gospel music. The duo bring an energy that we didn’t know we needed; from Tye’s edgy style to the many outfit changes that Jekalyn slays in, we are all in for a treat full of fashion and (of course) mind-blowing music. Recently, both hosts along with David and Tamela Mann, and Don Jackson (the founder of the Stellar Awards) addressed the press in an intimate conference to talk all things we can expect from this year’s event. All attendees were teary eyed hearing how honored Tamela was paying tribute to gospel legend Lady Tremaine Hawkins, why it was important to bring the awards show back to Memphis, what the coolest thing about hosting was, and of course, David Mann being true to himself and bringing the funny.
BET.COM started the press junket off with two questions that were on all of the invitees minds, one of which directed to Carr and Tribbett: “What was the coolest thing about hosting this years awards.” Jekalyn took the lead on the answer, mentioning the live aspect of the show and its family aspect referring to it feeling “just felt like a family reunion.” Tribbett followed, saying he felt the same way. “Jekalyn is my sister off-and-on camera, so you’re going to see that organic flow and synergy as well as the anointing and presence of God,” said Tribbett.
The second (question) would change our celebration and anticipation to praise. Reminded that the past few Stellar Awards have been moved around from city to city, Jackson said that ” it was really God” as the reason for the return home. He continued, “the city said what do you need, we want this back (and) with the invitation… with that energy, it all came together. It was a God coincidence that He made it happen.”
Right on time, as always. Knowing this event was in His divine timing makes us even more anticipatory of the powerful lineup of performers, such as the graceful Tamela Mann. Always expected to bring down the house, Jackson knew what he was doing when choosing her as one-third the trio of knockout voices to honor gospel legend Lady Tremaine Hawkins.
We Empower Magazine asked Tamela how did it feel paying tribute to Lady Tremaine. Tamela said, ” I just got chills; to be able to honor Tremaine was a honor for me, because I been listening to them since I was growing up… to be able to present to her and sing to her and see her smile was amazing.”
Now, we all know that David Mann can’t contain himself and will crack a joke at any moment, so it was only fitting that he kept the members of the press in constant laughter. A stand-out moment was Urban Bridges asking the hosts what elements they each brought to this year’s awards that hasn’t been experienced before. With so much energy and confidence, Tribbett said that they wanted to “represent the younger generation with excellence and grace,” but David quickly brought Tribbett back to reality and rained on his parade by saying, ” I think I’m going to be the first to let you know you’re not young. You keep saying the ‘younger generation,’ but you old!” David, why did you have to burst Tye’s bubble like that?
If this energy is indicative of the show that’s ahead, we’re confident we need this! Be sure to watch The 36th Annual Stellar Awards on Sunday August 1 at 8pm ET/7pm PT, airing on BET.
