Several influential female gospel singers are spreading the good news to encourage, inform, and entertain through positive messages—what they do best.
One lady who is making waves in the gospel music industry is Lena Byrd Miles. Oakland, California’s “Darling” who super-producer and MY BLOCK INC. label head Warryn Campbell affectionately calls ‘The Girl with Three Names.’
After spotting Miles on social media, Campbell set out to find the singer whose voice caught his attention. His mission ended in signing her to his label. She now joins the roster of artists such as multiple-award-winning duo Mary Mary, multi-award-winning singer/songwriter and radio personality Erica Campbell, award-winning singer/songwriter, and actress JoiStaRR, rising star Jason McGee and the Choir, and well-known crooner Jason Champion.
“Artists like Lena Byrd Miles aren’t born every day,” says Campbell. “She is very special, and her gift is supernatural. ‘Watch Me’ is impactful on impact. One listen, and you’ll fall in love with the girl with three names; Lena Byrd Miles.”
As fate would have it, the contemporary gospel powerhouse inked a deal with My Block Inc. and recently released her new single and music video “Watch Me,” which heralds her anxiously awaited debut album, due for a late 2021 release.
The accompanying video enforces the song’s message. It spotlights Miles’ tirelessly delivering her song in an elegant number while handling a vintage mic reminiscent of the 40s. Reinforcement from a choir helps drive the significance that God will lift you out of the pit of despair and can do so much more if you step back and watch Him work.
An effortless yet powerful song that encapsulates conviction, hope, and faith, ‘Watch Me’ is co-written by Miles and Warryn Campbell, produced by Campbell, and co-produced by Michael Bereal. The new single with a powerful lyrical message floats organically over changes of traditional gospel and jazz vibes sprinkled with a hint of R&B.
Miles explains the message and how the song partly came about. “The message of the song is watching God with great anticipation of Him making life better for us however He sees fit.” She adds, I found a piece of paper that I used while writing the song. At the top, I wrote the scripture 1 Samuel 12:16 that says, “Now then stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes.” Hence, ‘Watch Me.’
Sometimes we impede trying to fix things on our own. We go into overdrive when we encounter a problem and do everything possible human to rectify it. And as hard as we try, we can’t fix it. That is when believers must give it to God and watch Him work it out.
‘Watch Me’ leaves no room for confusion. The message is clear and repetitive that there is no mistake about what God can do if you let him. A few takeaway lyrics puts things in perspective, “I heard you when you cried out to me / I saw you when you fell to your knees / I still have the power to fix anything / Just watch me / Just watch me.”
A woman on a mission to spread God’s word, Miles stays busy. She has shared the stage with such luminaries as Tye Tribbett, Lalah Hathaway, Deitrick Haddon, Dorinda, John P. Kee, Doobie Powell, the late Thomas TC Clay, and more. She was also privileged to sing with the legendary Edwin Hawkins as part of the New Edwin Hawkins Singers—where her career took flight.
Whether handpicked to sing lead—part of Kanye West’s Sunday Service choir—to a 20,000-seat arena for DMX’s memorial service or to a 500-member church, her mission is to praise God while singing about what He’s done and how good HE is. Whatever the case, Miles sings with a purpose and is here for whatever doors God opens.
More than an artist, she is a wife, daughter, sister, friend, and licensed hairstylist with a unique ability to connect with people. Her infectious laugh and the innate ability to make people laugh draws you in however, it is her compassion for humanity that richly displays her character, integrity, and appreciation of life.
