Keyshia Cole Makes her Acting Debut in "Keyshia Cole: This is My Story"

Prepare to be in tears. The Lifetime original, "Keyshia Cole: This is My Story," is a compelling and emotionally-charged film that offers an intimate glimpse into the life and struggles of the renowned R&B singer, Keyshia Cole. Directed by D'Angela Proctor and Executive Produced by Keyshia Cole, with finesse and driven by powerful performances, this biopic successfully captures the essence of Keyshia's journey, highlighting her rise to fame, personal tribulations, and eventual triumph.

The original title was set to be "Unbreakable;" however, she changed it because she wanted to pay tribute to her late mother "Frankie," who died from a drug overdose.

Born in Oakland, California, Keyshia Cole was raised in a single-mom household by her adoring mother Frankie (played by Debbi Morgan). At two years old, Keyshia was placed into foster care because of Frankie’s struggle with substance abuse. Keyshia was then adopted by her foster parents, Leon ( played by Joseph C. Phillips) and Yvonne Coles (played by Tonia Jackson). As a teen, Keyshia traveled to Los Angeles multiple times to pursue her dreams of becoming a singer, even providing background vocals for MC Hammer. Her path into a music career put her at odds with Leon and Yvonne, who kicked her out when she didn’t follow their rules. Left to fend for herself, Keyshia’s voice saved her from her misfortunes. She eventually returned to Los Angeles. At 21 years old, GRAMMY award-nominated producer and music executive Ron Fair signed her to A&M Records. Keyshia became a multiple award-winning, chart-topping artist who fused R&B with Hip Hop.

The screenplay skillfully navigates through Keyshia's tumultuous childhood, growing up in a challenging environment, and her subsequent navigation through the music industry. It delves into the highs and lows of her personal life, exploring her complex relationships, including her troubled bond with her biological mother and the influence of her adoptive family. The film does not shy away from addressing the darker aspects of her journey, providing a raw and honest portrayal of her mother Frenkie's struggles with addiction and her heartbreak.

This is not just her story; it's also a story about family and making sure you mend damaged relationships. It's never too late to go back and correct things; regardless of what others may think about it. Keyshia always protected her family and stayed true to her individuality. This movie is a beautiful tapestry of her life. This movie showcases the strength of the human spirit and reminds us that even in the face of adversity, dreams can be achieved. Keyshia Cole's story is one of triumph and resilience, and this biopic does justice in celebrating her legacy as a remarkable artist and survivor. .Make sure you check out "Keyshia Cole: This is My Story on Lifetime.
