Finding Your Thriver’s Rhythm: Dr. Jacque Colbert on Sisterhood, Rest, and Leadership

What does it actually take to build a groundbreaking career without losing yourself along the way? During our Cultured Conversations interview for Women for the Culture, Dr. Jacque Colbert explored how authentic sisterhood, adaptability, and intentional rest can help women thrive.

For Colbert, corporate sisterhood extends beyond bloodlines, borders, and even the physical workplace. As a breast cancer survivor, she understands the profound value of having women who offer meaningful support through difficult seasons. Those relationships create a sense of belonging that helps women feel grounded and connected at work.

But sisterhood also has to hold up when women are pursuing the same professional opportunities. Colbert emphasized honest self-awareness and respect for each woman’s unique strengths. Healthy competition can coexist with true sisterhood when both people recognize what the other brings to the table.

That same internal awareness is critical when navigating workplace expectations. Colbert distinguished adaptation (a healthy exchange of values) from assimilation, which forces women to suppress their authentic identities to fit an organization. She encouraged women to speak up about their lived experiences when encountering micro-inequities.

Career growth, she explained, also requires preparation and flexibility. Changing roles or shifting directions often reflects developing skills and a powerful willingness to evolve.

Her signature “Thriver’s Rhythm” framework makes room for the different seasons that accompany that growth:

  • The Groove: When we are performing at our absolute best.

  • The Break: When transitions, grief, or unexpected setbacks interrupt our momentum.

  • The Sacred Pause: When we intentionally rest and recalibrate.

Colbert’s message about rest was especially clear: rest is a leadership discipline. Making space to recover directly supports the visionary thinking and creativity that effective leadership demands.

For women balancing heavy ambition with everything life asks of them, her perspective offers the ultimate permission slip to grow, accept support, and pause with purpose.
