I am back with Episode 2 of The Summer Cookout!
If you are new here, The Summer Cookout is an online cooking series where each episode centers on a featured summer ingredient that I turn into a meal and a drink. Once you have watched the series, you can come right here to Women for the Culture to get the full recipes.
Speaking of watching the series online, have you seen Episode 1? I made a beautiful salad with watermelon and queso de freír. You can check it out on our Instagram page, or you can watch the full episode here on YouTube:
This week, I had a farmers market box delivered to me that included gorgeous bicolor corn. I immediately said, "This is going to make the best corn salsa ever." Fire-roasted with a poblano pepper, fresh herbs, and onions? It is going to be so good on tacos.

It was at this very moment that I remembered I needed to make a drink with this, too, so I got creative. You will learn soon enough that I love all things Old Fashioned, so I said, "Well, instead of a classic margarita (which is what most people think about for tacos) why don't I do something fun with an Old Fashioned, my favorite cocktail?" I had an Oaxaca Old Fashioned for the first time the other day, which subs the whiskey in the cocktail for tequila as well as mezcal, tequila's smoky cousin, which felt like the perfect way to make something new with corn.
I even got to use a Black woman-owned mezcal in honor of National Black Business Month! Doce Mezcal is a NYC-based brand co-founded by Gabriela Lawrence, and her partner, Mia Tonelli. They partnered with Margarita Bias, a Oaxaca-based, third-generation-owned, master distillery that works with local women artisans to craft authentic mezcal.
Here are the recipes for my Mahi-Mahi Tacos with Corn and Poblano Salsa and my Sweet Corn Oaxaca Old Fashioned. Make sure you tag us on Instagram at @womenfortheculture, and me, @thekimimichelle, when you try it out!
