What a way to celebrate their first anniversary! Marley’s Bar & Grill, a Black-owned gem in Hyattsville, Maryland, invited local influencers and members of the media to experience a curated evening of food, culture, and community. The intimate affair offered complimentary "signature dishes and craft cocktails" that have made Marley’s one of the most talked-about establishments in Prince George’s County.
The night began with an array of starters: Caesar salad, honey butter cornbread, beef sliders, and steak and cheese egg rolls... each dish perfectly executed and beautifully plated. The main courses... succulent lamb chops and crispy catfish served over creamy grits, continued the culinary journey. Since I’ve been on an alcohol-free journey since January 15 of this year, rhey kept my Shirley Temples coming; however, I heard from guests that the White Peach Lemon Drop was the hit of the night. Other featured cocktails included a Blueberry Lemon Drop, Blackberry Sangria, and classic Champagne.

This was my first time visiting Marley’s, located in the former Qdoba space just steps from Prince George’s Plaza Mall. As I arrived, the black carpet and stanchions set the tone. Though this was a special event, the venue’s luxury ambiance made me wonder if the black carpet always greets guests. From the moment you step out of your car, the staff welcomes you warmly, and the vibe is undeniable. Nostalgic ‘90s and early 2000s R&B filled the room; just loud enough to spark sing-alongs while allowing for easy conversation.
Though quaint and intimate, Marley’s offers a full bar, multiple flat screens, and a private room for events. The Commanders-Cowboys game played during the evening, and as a Commanders fan, I appreciated the attention to detail. While the words "bar" and "grill" ate in the name, Marley’s atmosphere is far from casual; it’s upscale, polished, and brimming with class. Guests came dressed impeccably, from business casual to fashion-forward looks. Think The Gathering Spot meets Soulfood Sundays. You feel proud to be in this space... with your people.
Among the crowd was journalist Morgyn Wood (@morgynmedia), and as we chatted, we both agreed, "this is Black culture." The kind that thrives beyond headlines and stereotypes. That sentiment echoed in remarks by District 2 Councilmember Wanika Fisher, Esq., who presented owners Davonne Austin and Brandon Austin with an official citation. Both also received a certificate of recognition from the City of Hyattsville.
"These brothers are a testament to what family can do and what Black men can accomplish right here in Prince George’s County,” Fisher shared. “This is Black excellence. This is what Black business looks like—what Black dollars look like.”
As the plates continued to roll out, one thing became clear: Marley’s takes pride in every detail. The Caesar salad was light and balanced, the croutons perfectly crisp. The honey butter cornbread? Addictive. I could have eaten that alone all night.

The sliders were hearty; more like “junior gourmet burgers," while the steak and cheese egg rolls were the undisputed highlight. Golden, oversized, and stuffed with flavor, they redefine what an egg roll can be. The lamb chops were perfectly seared, with a flavorful crust and a tender center. The catfish, though interrupted by a few bones, paired beautifully with grits in a sauce familiar in taste, but one I couldn’t quite identify. It kept me returning for another taste.

What stood out most was the sense of family. The owners themselves didn’t hesitate to serve guests, delivering plates from the kitchen when needed. That humility and teamwork speak volumes about their leadership and vision. Marley’s is not just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of legacy, community, and the power of perseverance.
Special thanks to The Kredo Group (@thekredogroup) for the invitation and flawless execution of the evening. Their attention to detail reflected the same level of excellence that Marley’s embodies.
If you’re in the area, stop by Marley’s Bar & Grill (@marleysbarandgrillmd) to congratulate the Austin brothers on their one-year milestone, and to experience firsthand what Prince George’s County pride tastes like. This is a win worth celebrating.
