Shadowbanning, the Algorithmic Glass Ceiling and Why We Refuse to Be Silenced

At Women for the Culture, our mission has always been clear: to provide a sanctuary for Black women to see themselves reflected, respected, and resourced. But lately, the digital landscape has started to feel like a minefield. You may have noticed it; the posts that explicitly center Black identity, maternal health, or social justice seem to hit a wall, while pop culture exclusives and celebrity trends sail right through.
This isn't your imagination. It’s the algorithmic glass ceiling, and we’re here to pull back the curtain on why we post the way we do and how we’re fighting to keep our community connected.
The Silent Suppression: Shadowbanning in the Era of Project 2025
While the digital world has always struggled with implicit bias, the current political climate (marked by the looming shadows of Project 2025) has created a new era of digital "weathering." The NAACP says, "Project 2025 explicitly aims to dismantle diversity initiatives and civil rights progress, and we are seeing that same spirit reflected in the code of our favorite platforms."
Automated moderation systems are increasingly flagging terms like "Black," "Equity," and "Maternal Justice" as "controversial" or "political." Frontiers says, "This leads to shadowbanning, where the algorithm subversively hides our content from your feeds, the Explore page, and hashtags. When we speak our truth, the system tries to turn off the volume.
Digital Code-Switching: Our Tactical "Trojan Horse"
You might wonder why we share a mix of trending celebrity news alongside our heavy-hitting resources. It’s a survival strategy called "digital code-switching."
Just as Black people have historically switched dialects or behaviors to navigate professional spaces, we switch our content to navigate the algorithm. We use "high-performing" celebrity buzz to keep our engagement healthy and our page visible. These posts act as a "Trojan Horse," allowing us to keep our platform strong so that when we drop life-saving information (like our guides on Black maternal care), we have the reach to ensure you actually see it.
I blend in enough to get my way, to learn what I need, to secure what I came for and then I go on and create and build in an unconventional way. — Dr. K. Mahaffey, YES! Magazine
Why We Must Push Through
To our fellow creators, advocates, and sisters feeling the weight of this digital suppression: do not stop. The mission is greater than the popularity. When the system tries to make us invisible, it is a sign that our work is challenging the status quo. We are building a legacy of "narrative power." We stay unbothered by the low likes because we know that one shared resource can be the difference between a crisis and a breakthrough for a Black woman in our community.
The Blueprint for Moving Forward
Don't Chase Metrics
Focus on the impact, not the "likes."
Master the Mix
Use trending topics to fund your visibility, then spend that "currency" on your mission.
Build Direct Connections
Encourage your community to sign up for newsletters and visit the site directly. Don't let an algorithm be the only bridge to your sisters.
We are unbothered, unstoppable, and un-silenced! If they build a wall, we’ll build a ladder. Together, we are the culture... and the culture cannot be banned!
