Many people aspire to make it to Broadway, yet very few ever attain that dream. But what happens when Broadway is only the beginning, and you’re still searching for your purpose?
Jai’Len Josey is what happens.
When one single place or demographic produces multiple success stories, people often say, “there’s something in the water.” With Josey, however, there is something in her soul.
Atlanta native Jai’Len Christine Josey, began her career on Broadway as Pearl in "The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!". Despite her success, Josey did not feel fulfilled by performing songs that weren’t hers. Jai’Len ultimately decided to leave Broadway and focus on storytelling through her artistic lens, a decision that led to her 2020 EP, "Illustrations." The EP featured the beautifully crafted track “Can You Do It for Me?,” which showcased not only her talent as a writer but also her ear for layered harmonies, curated instrumentation, and impeccable vocal control.
As a self-proclaimed storyteller, she and her pen continued her creative journey to co-write songs for Ari Lennox’s "Age/Sex/Location," including the gold-certified “Pressure.” If her first EP was an introduction, her second EP "Southern Delicacy" served as a defining moment in which Jai’Len fully embraced her Southern roots and told us exactly who she was.
Now, with her official debut album, "Serial Romantic," she reaches another creative milestone. Josey revealed that the album was written from the perspective of an author writing a book and portraying multiple characters in pursuit of love. Ultimately, the characters realize the love they’ve been giving isn’t being reciprocated, sparking the protagonist’s transition from selfless to selfish. This album is a winding road of self-discovery.
Like all of her previous efforts, this album demonstrates that Jai’Len isn’t interested in creating songs or music merely for the moment. Instead, she’s committed to producing a timeless project. Produced by executive producer and Grammy winner Tricky Stewart, "Serial Romantic" transports listeners back to an era when albums told cohesive stories and captured emotions far beyond the constraints of short-form singles, where the instrumentation became part of the storytelling, often given space to shine independently of the lyrics.
This is where Josey truly distinguishes herself as a composer. Not simply a vocalist, lyricist, or producer, but as a composer in the fullest sense of the word.
