When author and women’s empowerment coach Nikki Branch set out to write her first children’s book, she wanted to create something that would inspire families like hers while helping others better understand autism. The result is Zahir Speaks in Colors, a children’s book about autism, empathy, and inclusion that is already sparking important conversations among parents, educators, and caregivers.

The story follows Zahir, a young boy who does not use words to communicate but instead expresses himself through colors, gestures, and joy. Seen through the eyes of his siblings, the book teaches children about understanding differences, showing empathy, and embracing inclusion. It is designed to help parents and teachers introduce autism awareness to children in a gentle and relatable way.
“The idea came to me one day while I was at work,” Nikki explains. “I thought, why not take what my family is experiencing and turn it into something that could uplift others? This book became a way to share Zahir’s story while also encouraging parents to see the beauty in their children’s unique ways of being.”
Zahir Speaks in Colors is more than a story, it is a tool for families and educators. Parents can use it to start conversations at home about autism and neurodiversity, while teachers can use it in classrooms to encourage acceptance and kindness among students. For siblings of children with autism, the book is especially powerful.
It provides representation and reassurance, showing that love and connection exist in many forms, even when words are not present. Early readers have shared that the book has opened doors for meaningful conversations about differences, patience, and unconditional love. For Nikki, those reactions confirm why she felt called to write it.
“As parents, we sometimes feel alone when our journey doesn’t look like everyone else’s,” she says. “I wanted to create something that said, ‘You’re not alone. Your family is seen, your child is celebrated, and their voice, however it shows up, is powerful."
Representation in children’s books is a topic Nikki is passionate about. Too often, families raising neurodiverse children don’t see themselves reflected in mainstream stories. Zahir Speaks in Colors fills that gap by providing an authentic and heartfelt look at one family’s experience, while also teaching universal lessons about compassion and understanding.
This focus on representation makes the book an important addition to both homes and schools. By highlighting a child with autism in a positive and affirming way, it normalizes differences and celebrates the many ways kids can connect with the world around them.
Zahir Speaks in Colors is now available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Beyond the book itself, Nikki is expanding the vision through Zahir’s World, a growing platform dedicated to stories, resources, and products that celebrate neurodiverse children and their families.
With its colorful illustrations, uplifting message, and powerful message of empathy, Zahir Speaks in Colors is quickly becoming a go-to children’s book for autism awareness, inclusion, and sibling connection.
